Prison Arts Collective: Bridging the University, Community, and Institution

Annie Buckley, Founder and Director of Community-based Art / Prison Arts Collective and Associate Professor of Visual Studies at California State University will present a lunchtime seminar titled ‘Prison Arts Collective: Bridging the University, Community, and Institution’ from 1 to 2pm on Thursday 12 April in RD004, Rathdown House, DIT Grangegorman campus. Light lunch will be provided. All welcome.

The event is hosted by the School of Languages, Law and Social Sciences and the Dublin School of Creative Arts, DIT with the support of the Irish Prison Education Association.

Speaker bio

Annie Buckley is an artist, writer, and educator with an emphasis on art and social justice. She is an Associate Professor of Visual Studies at California State University, San Bernardino, where she founded and directs Community-based Art as well as the program’s largest project, the Prison Arts Collective, for which Buckley has been awarded prestigious grants from the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Her artwork embraces image, text, and social practice and has been included in exhibitions since the early 90s; recent works include the participatory project, “Pollinating Kindness” and the multidisciplinary work, “The People’s Tarot,” which was included in Miami Basel 2014. Her writing about contemporary art has been published in Artforum, Art in America, The Huffington Post, and more, and she is a contributing editor to the Los Angeles Review of Books, for which she writes a column about facilitating art in prisons titled, “Art Inside.” She has a BA with honors from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MFA from Otis College of Art and Design.
